Day 6 - Friday 27 November 2016 Rome to London Our last day in Rome. Clear with blue skies but cold. Our flight was not until the afternoon, so we had time to enjoy our last morning relaxing. The plan was to visit Castle Sant' Angelo, an impressive fortress near our hotel. Unfortunately, our plans came unstuck when we arrived at the entrance to be told they did not accept credit card payment for tickets. The first place in Rome that did not, we had reduced our stash of Euros to the minimum so as not to be bringing a lot back to the UK with us. Instead of going in to the castle we walked along the banks of the Tiber and then retired to a public park to sit and watch the world go by while we read.
Castle Sant' Angelo The Tiber does not seem to play a big part in the life of Rome. Maybe it does in summer, but while we were there it seems to be more of a barrier to be crossed. Out walking in the early morning, there was the occasional jogger along the tow-path and some oarsmen on the water. The tow-path did not seem to be used by cyclists trying to avoid the constant rush on the roads. Shame really. Eventually, we returned to the hotel, collected our bags and caught the airport link coach. A speedy drive through Rome's built-up suburbs to the airport. There we checked-in and waited. The airport seemed very quiet and 'out of season'.
Fiat 500 'Topolino' Fortunately, there were no hold-ups with our flight. Take-off about 17.30, an uneventful flight and arrival at Heathrow about two and a bit hours later. We were lucky with our connections; from the time we got on the railair coach at Heathrow until when we walked in the door at Whitby Drive was an hour. The busiest part of the whole journey was jostling with all the Black Friday shoppers on the bus out from Reading! |
