Day 5 - Thursday 26 November 2016

Tissot exhibition and Trevi Fountain

Today was supposed to be a wet day so we planned indoor activities. On our arrival evening we noticed a street hoarding advertising an exhibition of James Tissot paintings. After a bit of investigation we discovered it was not too far from our hotel, so we decided to visit it. Setting off about 10.00, by the time we got there it was drizzling and continued like that for most of the rest of the day. Good to be inside.

The exhibition was excellent. It was billed as the first exhibition of Tissot in Italy; apparently, he is more famous in France and England. Not only did it feature many of his famous painting from the time he was in London in the 1870s, but also works before and after from his time in France and also featured some of his engravings as well. To make it all the more enjoyable, the audio commentary was in english. Also, it was much quieter than recent exhibitions we have been to in London; with space to look at the paintings without treading on anyones toes or blocking their view.

Afterwards we had a coffee before wandering amongst the backstreets around Piazza Navona for about an hour then making our way across the main shopping street (Via del Corso) to the Trevi Fountain. We had intended seeing it yesterday on our way to Villa Borghese but forgot to do so. When we found it we were somewhat taken aback by its size - it is enormous. There were lots of tourists there taking photos. A bit cold for anyone thinking of venturing in!

Afterwards we decided to do a bit of shopping, walking up and down the Via del Corso. Along the way we had a look in on the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj saw the Victor Emmanual Monument and went into several churches.

Eventually, all shopped out, we called it a day and headed back to our hotel, getting back for about 17.00.
