Day 1 – Sunday 22 November 2015

London to Rome

Up early for last minute packing. Fortunately, our flight was at a sensible time (14.30), so no need for a bleary-eyed early morning drive to the airport. James and Angéica kindly dropped us off at Heathrow on their way into London. We set off from Whitby Drive ablot 11.30 and arrived at Heathrow in good time for our flight.

There were no hold-ups with check-in or security and we were soon sitting in the departure area. One might epxect Sundays to be quieter than during the wek, but the place was still bisy. Most of the shops seemed to be up-market outlets for jewellry, watches and booze, Airport shopping felt just like a day out at Bister Outlet Village. We were quite hard pressed to find a plain, straight forward coffee outlet amongst all the bling.

No delays with the flight and we were in the air and on our way to Rome by 14.45. The plane wasn't full so we had room to spread out a bit. The two hour flight, with clear blue skies along the way, passed quickly enough. By the time we landed at Rome it was dark. A meanadering walk from the plane to collect our luggage and clear customs before taking the train from the sirport into central Rome.

Once in Rome, we successfully transfered from the overground station to the Metro. Five stops later we were out on the strreet, walking to our hotel. Darkness made reading the map a little difficult but without too many wrong turns or arguements we found our hotel in a quiet street close to the river.

We are here in Rome at the end of the tourist season and kept trying to imagine what the place must be like in high season during the summer - warm eveings, the plave heaving with tourists etc. Now in November the evenings are dark, and the temperatures are warm but not hot.

Arriving at the hotel a sensible time, we unpacked before going out to find somewhere for a bite to eat. We found a place many hotel residents had recommened on the web - Splendor. Just around the corner, it had a nice atmosphere and good value menu. A salad and beer, we relaxed watching the locals going about their business. Tired, but well-fed and watered, we made our way back to our hotel and bed.
